The Female Factory History & Interpretation Centre
fjmtstudio competition entry
Typology: Community Precinct Status: Competition Closed Location: Hobart, Tasmania
Project Details
In May 2017, an Architectural Design Competition was launched for a new information centre to be located on the grounds of Australia’s most significant historic site associated with female convicts - The Cascades Female Factory Hobart.
fjmtstudio prepared a submission that included a sinuous fluid space that hovered over the factory site, delicately touching the ground, the new form is beguiling & bold. A curved and gentle path leads you to the new building, the groundplane planting design included lavender planting symbolising the practice of healing, soft and flexible, turning away from stone and strong yards of the original site.
