Balmain House

design philosophy

The landscape design encompasses three outdoor spaces, the Roof Deck, Outdoor Dining Terrace and the private Garden Bench Space.

Privacy and the access of sunlight to the property is achieved by the design and the creation of multiple spaces / outdoor rooms for differing types of entertaining.

The area to be landscaped was at the rear of a single storey property around a contemporary extension to the original Balmain home. The design is to consider the needs of the professional couple and their two teenage children.

The family wants to utilise rainwater for irrigation and would like to include an edible garden with some fruit trees in the design. They need a clothesline and entertaining space as well as storage for garden tools and equipment.

rooftop deck

A place to entertain with friends or for the kids to hang out while the adults dine on the terrace. The Deck includes a BBQ and food preparation area and timber per-gola creating a partially shaded, open entraining area.

feature lantern fence

The Rooftop is bordered by a lantern feature ‘fence’. The vertical wire with colourful lanterns at varying heights gives the rooftop garden a unique artistic aspect. The lantern fence allows maximum light into the deck, perfect growing conditions for the veggie patch, and provides a sense of enclosure and privacy.

staggered hedges

Viburnum odoratissimum hedges are proposed at staggered intervals in the Balmain yard to frame the terrace, create feeling of an exterior room and provide a staggered visual cue when entering the yard from the rear lane. As you enter the yard, the staggered hedges camouflage the entry to the bin storage area, frame the terrace and lead your eye toward the house. From the terrace, the hedges screen the view of the gate and create a green walled room.

sustainability

The design incorporates a level of sustainability though the collection and use of rainwater and the addition of a veggie patch for homegrown food. The garden does not feature lawn, further reducing the watering demand of the property and hardstand areas such as the terrace are connected to garden areas, maximising passive watering opportunities.
