Phytoremediation ! what is it ? and what's the project?
The project is an office space associated with a large warehouse - which seems very normal and could be expected for an industrial area in Western Sydney.
What is unsual, and aspirational, is the client’s interest giving back to Country.
The project has a dual objective to deliver a quality landscape and heal the land.
phytoremediation... what is it?
Phytoremediation uses plants to rehabilitate polluted sites including sites contaminated with hydrocarbons.
Some plants help mobilise contaminants in the soil - for later removal - while others are able to absorb pollutants and break them down within plant tissues.
Plant selection ....
Acacias from the Mimosoideae family...
Species from locally endemic palette - the Cumberland Plains Woodland - are being considered for the phytoremediation strategy.
Research shows that Eucalypts & Acacias have had some success as phytoremediants !
