Are you moved by landscape spaces ? .....
Landscapes can be designed to capture beautiful vistas, screen for privacy, enhance or downplay the scale of the built form, or provide just the right place for quiet reflection and wonder.
What’s special is that each visit, each glance, each apparent thought is different. Landscape Design, itself, has a temporal quality.
....... "BECOME THE PART”.

This premise is so true for a very special project I’m working on for St Andrew’s College, the University of Sydney, called BECOME THE PART.
The College engaged artists Michael Snape & Agatha Gothe-Snape (father & daughter) to produce a piece of public art that embodies the values the College and its past and future stories.
Both artists are highly acclaimed & preceded by their reputations. This is their first formal collaboration.

The concept .....
A 2.4m tall folded piece of weathering steel is proposed to the Missendon Rd / Carillon Ave frontage. Removed from this structure, and enduring in negative, are the letters of the words BECOME THE PART.
"The words themselves change meaning and configuration as the viewers move around them – BE, COME, BECOME ART, BE PART. The sculpture variously invites all these things" (Agatha & Michael)

The landscape design for St Andrews Garden is founded on the ideas of openness and connection: to the College, the community and through the experience of the Garden itself.
In this sense, the art and the landscape reflect each other…… in a supportive, rather than a determining way.

invitation / conversation …..
The proposed removal of the boundary wall, together with the garden design, intends to create an invitation, and a conversation, between the community and to the College.

visit / experience …..
A new pedestrian pathway is proposed to connect Missendon Rd to Carillon Avenue through the Garden, encouraging passers-by to visit and activate the corner, to experience a new vista with the backdrop of the historic college.
Remnant artistic letters become outdoor furniture and suggest opportunities for social gathering or quiet-time for reflection.

next steps …..
The artwork is supported by the Public Art Advisory Panel (City of Sydney) - the next steps will be to develop the DA and prepare for the future commission and installation.
