Project Details
St Andrews Cathedral School required an upgrade to the existing rooftop outdoor play space. The roof area caters for years K-9 as well as providing for the after school care group.
The school is also a unique model and includes a First Nations School called “Gawura”. The accessible outdoor area is limited in size for the number of students who use the space. The rooftop upgrade required a commitment to designing for multifunctional uses with overlapping functions for play and outdoor learning, maximising opportunities for storage, exploring innovative designs where walls become learning surfaces, pinup boards or temporal spaces for game surfaces.
The space weaves into undercroft areas with overhead concrete soffits with connected open areas topped with ball netting above. The paintwork and colours were completely upgraded to a new colour scheme which was based on the School’s theme and connection to Country as a River and Sea school.
The school community brief required more green, more life & nature and a new home for the school chooks. GroupGSA design a greenwall and custom chicken coop. A customised sculpted sounding area for designed into the western covered undercroft area which is also earmarked for a meshed vertical play tower/box and hammocks for future design as budgets become available.
